VOCs and Indoor Air Quality: Why It Matters

Indoor air quality (IAQ) is no longer a niche concern – it’s a foundational element of occupant health, comfort, and productivity. Among the many pollutants that affect IAQ, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are some of the most pervasive and problematic.

At BAPI, we’ve been talking about VOCs long before it was trendy. In fact, we were one of the first to advocate for VOC-based ventilation control over traditional CO₂-based methods. Why? Because VOCs tell a more complete story about what’s really in the air.

What Are VOCs (and Why Should You Care)?

VOCs are a group of chemicals that evaporate at room temperature and are emitted from a wide range of sources:

  • Building materials (paints, adhesives, carpets)
  • Consumer products (cleaners, cosmetics)
  • Office equipment (printers, copiers)
  • Human activity (breath, skin, perspiration)

These compounds can cause:

  • Headaches and fatigue
  • Respiratory irritation
  • Reduced cognitive performance
  • Long-term health risks with chronic exposure

In commercial buildings, elevated VOC levels can lead to complaints, absenteeism, and even regulatory scrutiny. Yet many systems still rely solely on CO₂ monitoring, which doesn’t capture the full picture.

Why VOC Sensing Is a Smarter Strategy

Unlike CO₂, which primarily reflects occupancy, VOC sensors detect a broader range of contaminants, giving you a more accurate view of air quality and pollutant sources.

BAPI’s VOC sensors offer two output modes:

  • CO₂ Equivalent Output: Allows facilities to use ASHRAE’s VRP schedule while still responding to VOC levels.
  • Total VOC Output: Measures the full concentration of VOCs in parts per billion (ppb), ideal for environments where pollutant diversity matters.

This flexibility lets building managers choose the strategy that best fits their space and goals.

Built for Your Application, not “One Size Fits All”

BAPI sensors are available in multiple formats to suit your installation needs:

Whether you’re managing a school, office, healthcare facility, or manufacturing plant, our VOC sensors help you maintain healthier air and smarter ventilation.

Leading the Way in VOC Awareness

At BAPI, we’ve always believed that air quality should be measured by what’s actually in the air – not just how many people are breathing it. VOCs are a critical part of that equation, and our sensors are designed to make detection practical, reliable, and actionable.
